When Coleman Young won the Detroit mayor’s office with 92% of the black vote and with less than 10% of the white vote in 1973, he pledged to turn that city around. And that he did.

done more for Detroit, particularly with the Renaissance project, (the re-development of downtown Detroit) than any other person imaginable.
When the national media focuses on Detroit, it always puts great emphasis on its crime, unemployment, drugs, political corruption, etc. The truth is that these problems are not simply unique to Detroit alone. All cities and even small towns share these same problems. Again, the national white media always reports on the bad and never says anything about the good. Since we (the American Black Directory) speak almost exclusively to the black community, we see a very positive side of the black community in Detroit.
Blacks in general in Detroit maintain a high level of black consciousness and a rather confident and positive mental attitude about themselves. As a major city, they are the most positive in respect to being self supportive of each other than any other city in America today. By and large, small black owned businesses thrive more and are supported more by blacks in Detroit than any other large city in America.
When you consider this fact, keep in mind that Coleman Young was once a small black businessman himself. Having been in that capacity, he can understand the problems of small Black businesses and can therefore initiate programs through his administration to address their special needs. Therefore, we are giving the mayor and his city high grades; particularly on the black side.
Do visit this great city soon. You’ll be glad you did.
Visit and support the black owned businesses there. They’ll leave the light on for ya.
